Committed Community ActivistPat Kaplan, a Realtor from Portland, Ore., is honored to serve as the first President of the NAR Realtor Relief Foundation. The Foundation was organized on 9/01/2001 as a means to assist those affected by the 911 tragedy. The Foundation has continued to accept donations and continues to assist victims of national disasters with their housing needs.
Kaplan is distinguished in both her industry and community involvement. She was elected Treasurer for the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of REALTORS® in the years 2001, 2002 and 2003; named Vice President of Committees in 2004 and was a member of the Executive Committee for six years. Pat served many years on NAR's Strategic Planning, Finance, Technology and Risk Management committees. NAR, The Voice for Real Estate®, is America's largest trade association, representing more than 1.2 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industry.
Kaplan currently serves on the boards of the Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors®, the Oregon Association of Realtors®, the National Association of Realtors® and the Oregon Real Estate Forms Corporation.
In 1999, Kaplan served as NAR Regional Vice President representing the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. She has served on NAR’s Board of Directors in 1985,1986 and 1993 to present. She served as vice chair of the association’s Finance Committee from 1995 through 1998, and participated in a variety of committees, including Risk Reduction, State & Municipal, Legislative, Strategic Planning and Communications. She also has been involved in a number of association work groups and teams, and chaired the Presidential Advisory Group (PAG) on Governance in 1997. Kaplan also has served for a number of years as a Federal District Coordinator. Her risk management articles have been published in various trade magazines, and in 1995 she was awarded the Quill Pen Award from the Real Estate Brokerage Managers Council.
Kaplan was elected President of the Oregon Association of REALTORS® (OAR) in 1996, and was the only state president also honored as “REALTOR® of the Year” while in office. Known for her political activism, Kaplan chaired OAR's Oregon's Legislative Committee for four years and is a Golden R PAC contributor and a 8-time Life Member of RPAC, the association's political action committee.
At the local level, Kaplan was president of the Washington County Association of REALTORS® in 1991, and served on its Board of Directors from 1987 through 1993. She also chaired and participated in numerous committees at the local level. She was named “REALTOR® of the Year” by her peers in 1992 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1994.
Active in the community as well, Kaplan was involved in the Oregon Fair Housing Planning Conference from 1992 through 1994, and served on two state advisory committees: History of Housing Discrimination in Oregon, and Oregon Comprehensive Housing Affordability Study Group. She has volunteered for the Portland Community College Foundation, the Catlin Gabel School, the Oregon Ballet Theatre, the Oregon Junior Miss Scholarship Program, Campfire Girls, The Nature Conservancy and The World Affairs Council.
Kaplan currently serves as Treasurer of the International Real Property Foundation and is a member of Social Venture Partners of Portland (SVPP). She and her husband, Joel, reside in Portland. They have two daughters.
